By fixing the form of identity, Alphonse Bertillon modified our faces. From an eminently personal element, he made a tool of the State, an instrument of identification: a gridded, readable, occulted, talkative, divided, synthetic surface; a necessary, sufficient summary of the multiple realities of an individual. From this heritage, on the surface of every one of our contemporary faces, established as interfaces between individual and society where identification becomes a machine of government, subsists, barely blunted, the searching face of Alphonse Bertillon.

Sans titre (M.Bertillon) - le masque is Alphonse Bertillon’s own portrait (taken head on and in profile) from his 1893 file created in order to promote his identification system, run through a software specifically designed to perform facial analyses. This produced a three-dimensional interpretation in paper, which is then subsequently cut up into separate pieces and organised to recreate Bertillon's omniscient face.

En fixant la forme de l’identité, Alphonse Bertillon a façonné notre visage. D’un élément éminemment personnel, il a fait un outil d’Etat, un instrument d’identification, une surface quadrillable et lisible, occultante et bavarde, morcelée et synthétique, un résumé nécessaire et suffisant des multiples réalités de l’individu. De cet héritage, à la surface de chacun de nos visages contemporains, établis comme interfaces entre individu et société où l’identification se fait machine de gouvernement, subsiste, à peine émoussée, la figure scrutatrice d’Alphonse Bertillon.

Sans titre (Monsieur Bertillon) – le masque est un masque en papier à son effigie. Suivant les indications données sur la fiche signalétique d’Alphonse Bertillon établie en 1893 afin de promouvoir son système d’identification, sont colorisées les photographies de face et de profil de « Monsieur Bertillon », tel qu’il est nommé par les opérateurs de la Préfecture de Police de Paris. Puis, par l’intermédiaire d’un logiciel développé par un informaticien de Cambridge spécialisé dans les technologies de l’analyse faciale, le double portrait de Bertillon est transformé en multiples facettes de papier, découpé, assemblé ces éléments parcellaires afin de reconstituer un visage.
